What To Wear to a Photo Shoot

Different photographers have different ideas about what you should (and shouldn't) wear to a photo shoot. I have listed a few of my favorite tips below:

General clothing tips to consider:

In general, avoid stripes, polka dots, logos, words, and large plaids. Keep in mind that some prints can be overly distracting.
Avoid bright, shiny jewelry.
Wrinkle-free!
Comfort is key. If you are uncomfortable, don't wear it. Family photos most often involve a bit of climbing on rocks or a walk through the park. Many a family portrait poser has ended up in a tree. My goal as a photographer is to have a fun photo session with you! If you can't have fun in your outfit because it's too restricting, too revealing or you can't get it dirty, please wear something else. It will make your family photo session much more enjoyable for you.
Don't do trendy. Since the 80's everyone has made fun of skinny jeans and they seem to be back. Don't let your tapered leg pants or any current trend be the brunt of jokes for the next 20 years. If you own them and want to wear them, fine. Just think about whether that's how you want to remember yourself in 10 years.
The smaller the logo, the better it is. Nothing is more distracting in a family portrait than a giant NIKE Swoosh. Enough said.
The shoes make the outfit. A great outfit is completed with great shoes. If you own funky shoes, wear them! White sneakers show up like a purple elephant. As much as I love buying new runners, please don't include yours in your family photos. If you don't want them to stand out, keep with neutral. Also, please don't be afraid to take them off! There is an excellent chance we will do some barefoot shots.
If it fits, wear it. Just keep in mind that the camera does record every detail of your outfit. If you are thinking that an article of clothing might be too tight, it will definitely show up as too tight in your family photos. You don't want this to happen. But...don't err on the side of caution and wear something that is clearly too big. Just make sure the outfit is comfortable and not accenting anything you don't want accented.

Specifically for the girls:

If you have a flowing skirt or dress that fans out when spinning, please bring it.
Fresh manicure/pedicure...or at the very least, fresh polish...or bare nails. No chipped color.

Specifically for individual portrait sessions (2-3 hours):

Bring along 2-3 different outfits...no green, please.

Suggestions for the family:

Stick to one style and color scheme: Make sure everyone in the group is wearing one style of clothing. Don't have Dad wear a dress shirt while Junior has on a "No Fear" T-shirt; don't have Mom wear a formal gown while Sis has on a halter top and shorts.
You want to coordinate your outfits, not match them. Choose a color scheme and work with it. Different colors from the same color palette look great. Soft colors with soft, bold colors with bold..
Choose an outfit for the hardest person to dress, then build outfits for everyone else around that style and color.
Avoid bright, shiny jewelry and large belt buckles. You want the main focus to be on your family, not your clothes.
Again, wrinkle-free, please!

Scrapbooking Your Heritage

I have been asked (with a snicker)...what's so great about scrapbooking?

Some people think scrapbooking is all about putting birthday, holiday, or travel pictures into a book with pretty papers...and in some respects it is. But for me, scrapbooking is a way for me to share my life with my descendants...so they will know more about me than my name, birthdate, and my image in a few photos. I don't know why that's important to me but it is. Maybe it's the genealogist in me, seeing the images of those family members gone long before me and wondering what their daily life was like.

So yes...I scrap life’s special events, but I guess my ultimate goal is to bring myself to life for those who will never know me and may wonder about the kind of person I was, what I believed, and what my life was like. So rather than just sticking with vacations and school sports, I tend to scrap about what's in my pantry, favorite ornaments, my love affair with a kitchen appliance, feelings about current events, my shoe addiction, and other uneventful happenings in my life. So for me, THAT’s what’s so great about scrapbooking...and that's why I'm not a "typical" scrapbooker.

Meaningful scrapbooking doesn't have to be expensive and it doesn't have to be time consuming. I've posted an example of a VERY simple layout I did a few years ago. It’s simplicity proves that scrapbooking need not be expensive with pages full of trinkets and embellishments, not does it have to be time consuming. The journaling reads:

In so many ways, this little church represents a big part of my heritage. My great-grandfather, William C. Rose, was one of the church founders. His son, John G. Rose, Sr, my grandfather, lived his entire life in Timmonsville, and this church was an integral part of his life.

My parents were married in this church.

I was baptized in this church.

My great-aunt played the organ and my uncle sang in the choir.

I delivered my grandfather’s eulogy in this church.

I never lived in Timmonsville, SC, but as a young girl, I spent many summer weeks there with my grandparents, who took me to this church every Sunday that I was visiting. We did not drive to church because there is no parking lot! Only a few spots on the street were available, and those were needed by folks who lived to far to walk. Since my grandparents lived only one block away, it was a normal event for us to walk.

As the years have passed and this small country town has undergone changes, the Timmonsville Presbyterian church, once a thriving and vital part of the community, has seen its membership shrink. The tried and true remaining few members, including my uncle John Jr., still cling to the church they love...

...the church that I will always cherish...

...the church that is my heritage.

Halloween Photo Tip - Jack-o-Lantern Photos

Take jack-o-lantern photos at dusk. Avoid shooting jack-o'-lanterns when it's completely dark. Although a shot of the glowing portions of a jack-o'-lantern alone can be beautiful, the photo is more effective when the pumpkin's overall shape is evident. Shoot just after sunset when the sky is still a deep blue, or simply turn on a porch light and arrange the jack-o'-lantern so the area behind it is softly lit.

Turn Off Flash for Jack-O'-Lantern Photos. When taking photos of jack-o'-lanterns, turn off your flash. A bright burst of light will destroy the glow emanating from lit pumpkins. If possible, place more than one candle inside the pumpkin to boost the light.

1) Make a "scraplift" or scrapbook ideas album and fill it with techniques, layouts, and tips you like.

2) Rather than scrapbooking in chronologically dated order, scrapbook what motivates you at the time...what touches you at the moment.

3) When machine stitching on paper, set the stitch length longer than for fabric. The result is neater and you'll have fewer rips!

This layout idea (Alaska family trip) came from the TV show, Lost.

Journaling:
Behind our cabin on the cliffs, there was a steep dropoff into thick, green jungle-like foliage. Christopher and Elizabeth decided to don their heavy-duty hiking gear and before Rick and I knew it, they had disappeared over the edge.

Just about the time we began to wonder if they had gotten lost, the cabin owners walked out to greet us and asked if we wanted a bonfire built. We did, of course, and also mentioned that our kids went exploring “down there”. They assured us they would be fine and that he had built a tow rope to help his kids go up and down.

“But I hope they watch out for the moose and bears.”
